Forms and Documents

Form 1
You will receive a Vehicle Import Form – Form 1 at the time your vehicle enters Canada. You and the CBSA must properly complete this form in order to have your vehicle licensed in Canada. It is recommended that you use a customs broker to handle this paper on your behalf to avoid any setbacks.

Form 2
This will be provided to you by the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) after your vehicle has crossed into Canada, the RIV fees are paid, and the recall documentation has been submitted to RIV.

Recall Clearance Letter
This letter is required for every car being imported into Canada (less than 15 years old) by the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV). It is required after your vehicle crosses into Canada but before you can have it registered and plated. This recall letter tells the Government of Canada that your vehicle is safe and free of defects.

Provincial Safety Inspection
A vehicle safety inspection is required for all vehicles being imported into Canada from the US. Each province has it's own requirements which can be found here.

Emissions Testing
Most provinces require an emissions inspection to be completed prior to the vehicle being registered (ie. Ontario).
